Red Oak Leaf Lettuce: A Powerful Comeback, Beauty and Flavor of Yesteryear!

Discover Red Oak Leaf lettuce, a variety with a rich past, whose history is closely linked to that of botanical classifications. In 1856, Vilmorin-Andrieux designated it, along with the green oak leaf, under the general name of romaines (romaines lettuces). Its description at the time emphasized the absence of a head, the numerous 30 cm long radical leaves, cut into elongated, pointed lobes, of a speckled brownish-green, and forming a well-filled heart. In 1883, a mention highlighted its similarity to the green oak leaf, differing only in the brown tint of its foliage. Fortunately, this excellent lettuce has not fallen into total oblivion and is now back in the spotlight! Imagine growing a lettuce whose history has spanned centuries, from the botanical classifications of yesteryear to your plate!

Like its green-leaved cousin, it is very resistant to bolting, which occurs late in the fall, allowing for a long harvest period. Its tender and highly decorative leaves are produced in abundance, adding a touch of colorful elegance to the vegetable garden. The cut leaves keep very well and are usually harvested when they are about 15 cm long. By leaving the heart in place, you will enjoy several regrowths throughout the season, ensuring continuous production. Grow our organic seeds of Red Oak Leaf lettuce and rediscover a flavor of yesteryear, combining beauty, history, and generosity.
