Discover the Paris Island Cos romaine lettuce, an exceptional variety developed around 1949 by the United States Department of Agriculture and Clemson University of Charleston, South Carolina. Named after a small island in this American state, it was introduced on the East Coast of the country by the Ferry Morse Seed Company in 1951. Its full English name is Parris Island cos, with cos being the English term for romaine. Imagine growing a lettuce that has set a quality standard for romaine lettuces, internationally recognized for its taste and robustness!
It forms a large, elongated, very uniform head 30 cm high. Its dark green outer leaves conceal a delicious creamy white heart. They themselves are exceptionally tender and flavorful, and sport a beautiful contrasting white midrib. It is also grown for its young shoots, popular with top chefs for their taste qualities. Gardeners also love it for its resistance to heat and diseases, including mosaic virus and tip burn. It is an excellent summer lettuce that is resistant to bolting. Its many qualities were recognized in England in 1999 when it received an Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).
