Discover Oak Leaf lettuce, a variety with a rich history, introduced by the famous seed company Vilmorin as early as 1771. The synonyms laitue à la reine (Queen lettuce) and laitue à carême (Lenten lettuce) are mentioned in the reference book Les Plantes Potagères by Vilmorin-Andrieux in 1883, and probably before. In this book, it is even described as laitue épinard (spinach lettuce), with laitue à feuille de chêne being a synonym at the time. It is this last name that has stood the test of time! Imagine growing a lettuce whose history dates back more than two centuries!
This true ancestor produces beautiful, deeply lobed green leaves, resembling oak leaves, with a remarkably sweet flavor. The dense rosette consists of countless rather long leaves, a beautiful blond green. These leaves regrow very well after cutting, allowing for continuous harvests. In addition to being delicious in salads, Oak Leaf lettuce reveals exceptional qualities when braised or stewed, offering surprising culinary versatility. Highly tolerant to cold, it is also distinguished by superior resistance to insects and diseases. It even seems that rabbits avoid it! Moreover, it is very slow to bolt, which allows it to be grown throughout the summer. Grow our organic seeds of Oak Leaf lettuce and harvest a historical heritage, both sweet, robust, and versatile.
