The Craquante d'Avignon/Sucrine Lettuce: A Mediterranean Jewel, Crisp and Flavorful!

Discover the Craquante d'Avignon lettuce, also known as Sucrine, a true Mediterranean jewel with remarkable garden performance. There is some confusion with a ""grasse"" lettuce bearing the same name, but the variety we offer is a cross between a romaine and a butter lettuce, combining the best of both worlds. This old variety is very popular, as evidenced by its many French and English names: Craquante d’Avignon and Craquerelle du Midi in France; Buttercos Sucrine, Sweet Gem, Winter Density, and Little Gem in English-speaking countries. Imagine a lettuce that is both crisp and melting, perfect for all seasons!

Its small, firm head, 20 cm high, composed of dark green, erect, fleshy, and crisp leaves, resembles romaine lettuce, while the blistered texture and creamy, almost sweet flavor are reminiscent of butter lettuce. Very popular in the south of France due to its high tolerance to heat and drought, it rarely bolts, making it an excellent choice for continuous production throughout the summer, with sowing from late April to mid-August. It is also grown in spring and autumn thanks to its good cold resistance. Like other lettuces, Craquante d'Avignon/Sucrine is refreshing and rich in potassium, magnesium, calcium, and vitamins. It is delicious raw as a starter with fresh cheese, in sandwiches or in salads. Although the habit of cooking lettuce has been lost over the centuries, this variety lends itself well to such preparations, for example braised in chicken broth with shallots or even in a tart. Grow our organic seeds of Craquante d'Avignon/Sucrine lettuce and savor a Mediterranean delight, crisp, flavorful, and versatile.
