Green fertilizers, often unfamiliar to gardeners, are essential to organic farming. Used as temporary ground cover, they enrich the soil with minerals essential for vegetable crops. They weaken and smother weeds, prevent erosion, leaching, and soil drying. These plants improve soil quality and structure, enrich it with organic matter, and produce reserves of potassium, phosphorus, and nitrogen. The flowering of green fertilizers attracts many insects and pollinators, thus breaking the cycle of diseases. Left on the surface after mowing, they form excellent mulch. When buried, they facilitate water infiltration into the soil. Green fertilizers improve soil health, promote biodiversity, and increase crop productivity in an ecological and sustainable manner.

Advantages and characteristics of each green fertilizer
Oats:
- Sow at a depth of 1.5 cm
- Germinates in 5 to 14 days and is returned to the soil as a green fertilizer after 30 to 65 days
- Grows in all soil types
- Sow between April and September in soil between 1 and 24°C
- Adapted to cold conditions, but will not survive winter
- Seeding rate: 4 lb / 1000 ft2 - 2 kg / 100 m2
Oats and peas:
- Germinates in 5 to 14 days and is returned to the soil as a green fertilizer after 30 to 65 days.
- Grows in all soil types
- Sow between April and September in soil between 1 and 24°C
- Adapted to cold conditions, but will not survive winter
- Pea root mass is low compared with oats, but its capacity to fix nitrogen in the soil is almost double that of oats.
- Seeding rate: 4 lb / 1000 ft2 - 2 kg / 100 m2
Buckwheat:
- This plant is a phosphorus extractor that purifies the soil.
- Germinates in 2 to 6 days and is returned to the soil as a green fertilizer after 30 to 65 days
- Buckwheat is well adapted to poor soils
- Most effective green fertilizer for weed suppression
- Sow between June and July in soil between 15 and 25°C
- Adapted to cold conditions, but does not survive winter
- Although its flowers attract many beneficial insects, it is advisable to bury them when they appear to avoid letting them produce seeds
- Sowing rate: 4 lb / 1000 ft2 - 2 kg / 100 m2
Rye:
- Rye has an imposing fibrous root system.
- Germinates in 3 to 6 days and is returned to the soil as a green fertilizer the following spring
- Sow between September and October in soil between 1 and 20°C
- This biennial variety survives harsh winters
- Planting is more laborious when mowed at full maturity
- It is recommended to wait a few weeks before sowing, following the destruction of the rye.
